National Weather Service completed a damage survey from the Clarksville tornado, determining it to be an EF-3. It also determined that there were 150 mph wind speeds. The destruction path was approximately 600 yards long and 11 miles wide.
According to a NWS report, the tornado touched down on Fort Campbell at approximately 1:41 pm. The damage was mostly limited to trees. The tornado quickly intensified when it crossed Walnut Grove Road, destroying a building adjacent to a nearby church. This was the Clarksville School of Fine Arts.
The report stated that “the tornado continued to the northeast, causing damage to dozens of houses in a community along Garrettsburg Road close by Purple Heart Highway.” It was now an EF2/120 mph Tornado.
The tornado destroyed dozens of manufactured and mobile homes in a densely wooded area south of Britton Spring Road. “The tornado then crossed into another neighbourhood causing severe damage near Eva Drive and several homes that were only connected with straight nails.
The tornado reached EF-3 speed (140 mph), as it crossed Highway 41. It struck several businesses including a fast-food restaurant that was vacant and a strip mall with only the interior left.
“Just east from Highway 41, north of Ringgold Road was another neighborhood that suffered significant damages. The tornado, as it continued to the northeast at 150 mph, destroyed four brick homes with vinyl siding on Henry Place Boulevard.
Henry Place was the site of two separate murders: Donna Allen (59), a Florida resident, and Arlan C. Coty (10).
The debris was blown into the West Creek Elementary school, which sustained damage to its roof. The tornado damaged two dozen two-story brick apartments that were brand new. At least 12 of them had roofs gone. The NWS reported that dozens of houses had suffered roof damage near Needmore Road (EF-2), and along Tiny Town Rd.
The tornado crossed Interstate 24 near Trenton Road where many cedar trees had been uprooted. The tornado continued across Tylertown Road and caused EF-1-EF-2 roof damage, siding damage on dozens of houses in three different neighborhoods.
