Officials say that a long-established Lawrence restaurant has suffered severe damage after a fire overnight.
The fire was put out by crews for several hours after the firefighters were called to the Cielito Lindo Mexican Restaurant just before 11:30 pm on Wednesday.
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Department reported that the fire had been extinguished at 7 am, however crews were still on site Thursday morning in order to monitor any hotspots.
The roof and floor of the restaurant fell, according to officials. A firefighter sustained a minor burn while fighting the fire. Nobody else was injured.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The city installed safety barriers around the building because of its severity and location in a very busy area. The city has set up safety barricades around the area due to its location on a busy street and because of the severity of damage.
The crews will install fencing and barricades on New Hampshire Street, between 8th Street and 9th Street to block access to the New Hampshire Street parking lot.
The fence will extend to the west and cross the alley to reach the Limestone Pizza Kitchen Bar. Alley south of Limestone will be open to 9th Street.
Crews will also place a barricade on the alley’s north side to keep vehicles out and pedestrians in.
