After a Monday fire, dozens of families may have to rethink their holiday plans.
The fire happened in a building with 40 apartments on Washington Avenue, Racine. It is currently boarded-up. More than half the apartment units in the building were affected by the fire, which forced 30 people to leave their homes.
Red Cross provides temporary housing at Grace Church for some of these people.
They can stay here in a warm, safe environment. They can come here if they want food. If they need food. Jennifer Warren, from The Red Cross, said: “Someone to speak to about their experiences.”
According to the Racine Fire Department, damage is estimated at $750.000. Most of the damage was to the third-floor attic and interior.
Earl James Brown was one of those displaced residents. He claims he just moved into the first-floor of the building which has now suffered major water damage. He said, “I bought new mattresses, electronics and throw rugs to cover the floors.”
All the Christmas food that he bought was destroyed in the fire.
He is trying to remain positive despite what he has lost. He said, “It’s hard to stay down and be depressed about this situation.
Brown, along with his neighbours, are waiting to hear what the next step is. Brown said he was counting his blessings.
I’m hurt, but the world goes on. All the things can be replaced. “Life can’t ever be replaced,” said he.
Investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause of this fire.
