Staff at Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve reported that several spaces on the trails had been vandalized, and that a fire started.
Staff reported that people entered the preserve after-hours and damaged the animals.
Ashley Morgan, Executive Director of Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve Foundation said: “It’s surreal.” “It’s devastating.”
The preserve is the only location in Portsmouth that has all of the necessary equipment. All the kayaks in the fleet melt from the heat.
The Creekside Lab which contained supplies for student oyster-raising programs and regional water monitoring, as well as benches, fences and bridges on the trails, were also destroyed.
Mason Spiroff was an Eagle Scout who worked at the property several years ago. The preserve was maintained by him, and he built the structures.
Mason Spiroff said, “I made two benches, A frames and a rack for kayaks.” The Eagle Scout Project is all about improving the communities around you.
This backyard is a favorite of many people.
Morgan described a large, green area in an urban setting as a precious treasure. He said, “It is a jewel.” The preserve offers a wide range of activities, such as bird-watching, wildlife observation, walking and specialized research and programming.
This backyard will continue to be improved in the near future.
Spiroff said, “the better the place you create, the better your life will be.” For me, it was partly because I thought that if I improved the park, it would be more enjoyable for people.
While staff decides on the next steps, the summer program at the preserve as well as kayak rentals and tours are suspended.
Anyone who saw something suspicious on Friday evening or afternoon was asked to call the police or them.
