A storm on Wednesday night knocked down power to thousands of East Valley homes.
Crews were working around the clock in order to restore the power. Initially, over 43,000 SRP customers and APS clients had no power. At approximately 5 am, just over 3,300 customers of SRP and SRP-served utilities were left without electricity. By noon, service was restored to almost everyone, and only 100 customers were affected.
On Friday morning, heavy rains and high winds caused significant damage to the East Valley. First responders in Mesa were particularly busy as roofs of mobile homes and apartments had been ripped off. Palm Harbor Estates near Mesa Drive & McKellips suffered particularly severe damage. No injuries were reported. However, many people are finding downed trees and power lines in their neighborhood.
Many were happy to see the sun after the Valley of the Sun was hit by a heatwave lasting a whole month. After nearly a whole month of extreme heat, the temperatures should quickly return to normal. Arizona is under an Excessive Heat Warning from the National Weather Service until Saturday. A high temperature of 116°F was forecast on Thursday.
Phoenix Sky Harbor has not received any rain that is measurable despite all the rain. This streak of dry weather continues for nearly a whole month. As we near the weekend, however, it is expected that storms will increase. First Alert Meteorologist April Warnecke also says that the temperature high will drop below 110 degrees for the first day in almost a week by Sunday or Monday.
