Hendersonville declares a state of emergency and asks people to avoid Main Street

The majority of damage caused by the Hendersonville Tornado is located on the north side of Main Street.

Officials from the city say that only minor injuries were reported. However, several businesses and a neighborhood off Main Street have suffered severe damages. There are still power outages in the city, despite all of the downed lines.

Police, firefighters and the public works department have worked around-the-clock to remove debris and offer assistance. All available resources will be used to remove debris. City Codes Department has already been out doing structural assessment to ensure public safety,” said a city release.

Jamie Clary, the mayor of Hendersonville has declared an emergency to coordinate the response more efficiently to the damage caused by the tornado.

The safety and wellbeing of our residents is our number one priority. Clary stated that declaring a state-of-emergency would allow us to mobilize all the resources we need to effectively respond to this crisis. We are dedicated to helping those in need and have our hearts open to everyone affected.

Officials expect that the New Shackle Island Road between Volunteer Dr. and Main St. will reopen in the morning.

We urge everyone, however, to avoid Main Street as much as possible. Hendersonville officials stated that there is extreme traffic which delays response crews.

John C. Isbell, Mayor of Sumner County declared a state-of-emergency in Sumner County so that people could remain safe while the damage assessment continues.

Our team will do their best to complete the disaster assessments. Isbell stated that we are a resilient, strong community. We will become even stronger by working together to rebuild and clean our community. Keep in mind those affected by storms, especially families that have lost a loved.

Bree Smith, a NewsChannel 5 Meteorologist who lives in Hendersonville and gives us an update on Saturday’s damage.

Near Old Shackle Street and Main Street there’s a large hole at the home of the woman running a medical practice. If you go east, on the north side, there is a restaurant called Pizza Ranch, and a shop named Big Play. Both are severely damaged.

It then moved on to the next small business, Acai Addiction. Then it went along Main Street and a railroad track. Further north the tornado travelled towards an Halloween and Party Supply store where its roof was completely collapsed.

Bree explained that “50 yards away from the old Kroger, which is now a Walgreens and an All Air Extreme store is an auto shop where it looked as if the roof had been lifted and wrapped on the side.” You can see that small businesses in the town are watching with dismay and shock at what is left of their buildings.

Traffic along Indian Lake, the Eastern part of the town and as you near the border of Hendersonville or Gallatin is very congested because the police shut down the majority of Main Street.
