Over the past two years, Shepshed residents have lived with a leaky roof. Last year, a roofer condemned it. But nothing was done.

Adam Baker, 50, and Kelly Townsend 38, contacted their housing group Longhurst Group in 2012 to express concerns over the roof. Mr Baker took time off work to build scaffolding for the roof and began roof repairs. However, he said that the job only lasted about an hour and it was not resolved.

In the bathroom, there were leaks. As a consequence of this, he has continued to complain. Longhurst Group officials claimed that delays were putting his partner, who is partially sighted and himself at risk. Since the pandemic, it has had “substantial delays” in work because of a communication breakdown with an old contractor.

After a while, a different roofing contractor came to look and immediately condemned the work. Nothing happened after that.” “He said.

Nothing changed despite the roof not being fit for purpose. Instead, the weather started to get worse. Baker explained how a shower from April had caused damage to the bathroom ceiling which then led to leaks in the kitchen. As soon as I opened my door, the guy recognized the house. He couldn’t imagine that they hadn’t taken any action. The house will fall down eventually, and we have daughters at home. It’s unsafe.”

Because the roof’s condition had been determined, there was nothing the contractor could do to stop the leak. The contractor said: “It leaks every time it rains. We can’t do anything about it. All we can keep doing is putting buckets on the roof, but it will leak into the kitchen when we are not there.”

Mr Baker voiced his dissatisfaction with the roof in their holiday house, a problem he’d called to discuss several times. The tenant said that they’d been paying on time for 6 years and never missed a payment. However, despite newsletters from the landlord, or surveys they hadn’t received any attention.

LeicestershireLive intervened to have contractors check the ceiling in the bathroom. Tenants were then given six-weeks for the installation of a new roof.

Longhurst Group has acknowledged that a failure in communication at a home resulted into enduring stalemate for two years. In the past, interim measures had been taken to alleviate the issue with the roof. However, it has now become clear that the entire roof needs to be replaced. Their contractor Ian Williams is in communication with them to arrange the project. They plan to have the work completed within a couple of months.
