Price, 39 years old, died at Illinois Masonic Medical Center on Monday. Annette Nance Holt, Fire Commissioner, said that Price was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
After battling a fire of extra alarm in Lincoln Park on Monday, a Chicago firefighter fell four stories down a skylight shaft. He had been warning students to leave the building.
Sean Graney is a Northwestern University graduate student living in the building. He said, “He risked his life for me. As much as it was his job, that’s still not what he had to do.”
It’s sad to me that someone died saving my life and all these other lives.
Officials say that firefighter Andrew “Drew” Price, who was working on the roof in the 4400 block of North Lincoln Avenue, opening ventilation holes, fell into the skylight shaft and landed on the basement level. Lincoln Station is located on the first floor of this building, and there are apartments above.
Price was taken by Chicago Fire Department commissioner Annette Nance Holt to Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he succumbed to “significant injuries” standing next his doctors in the emergency room on Monday morning.
Nance-Holt claimed that she worked out with Price and knew him.
The fire commissioner stated, “We knew Drew all.” Drew worked out. Drew loved health. He was loved by many. “He will be greatly missed by everyone.”
The fire officials are still speaking with other firefighters on scene in order to better understand what occurred on Monday. However, department spokesman Larry Langford stated that it appeared Price fell because his vision became impaired while fighting the blaze.
Langford stated that “he just didn’t see his footing, and visibility might have been an issue, but it all points to this being an accident because he couldn’t see.”
Price was still trapped in the building when crews found him, but he appeared to be responsive. This is according to Price’s battalion commander. To get him out, firefighters had to cut a hole through a wall.
Around 150 firefighters responded to the incident. Nobody else was hurt. Langford confirmed that the alarm was received shortly before 6 am. The fire is believed to have been started in one of the kitchens, but it wasn’t clear which. Langford says the Office of Fire Investigation continues to investigate, although he said that foul play was not suspected. Langford said it was still too early to tell how the fire began.
Around 100 Chicago firefighters and police officers gathered in the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday to bid Price farewell.
Brandon Johnson, the Mayor of Edmonton expressed his condolences in a public statement.
The statement read: “Our hearts are heavy as we grieve the loss of Andrew Price who died in the line-of-duty while fighting a fire at Lincoln Park.” Andrew Price gave his life to serve the City of Chicago by taking up his post at the frontlines of an imminent threat to safety and the community. “He made the ultimate sacrifice for those who were in danger — a credit we will never be able to repay.”
