A total of 154 suspects have been arrested by the police

The wreckage of a demolished building collapsed on scavengers in Kano yesterday, killing one and injuring three.

Earlier, the Guardian reported a massive invasion of youths looting iron rods, roofing sheets, interlock blocks, and other valuables from illegal structures demolished by state authorities.

At about 11:00 a.m., the youth started draining the concrete wreckage along Murtala Mohammad way to pull out iron rods.

Ibrahim Yakub, director general of Kano State Urban Development Authority (KNUPDA), confirmed the development, saying four scavengers were stuck in the rubbles while searching for metal.

According to Yakub, who led the government task force on demolition of illegal structures, three people were rescued alive with injuries, while one was found unconscious and later confirmed dead.

Scavengers who illegally enter demolished buildings risk death, Yakub said.

To avoid public disturbance, the government began demolition at night.

Youths invaded the wreckage of the property, however, and he regretted it.

The Kano State Police Command has announced the arrest of over 154 scavengers at various demolition sites for attempted theft and stealing of public property.
