In the early morning hours of 24 July, Moscow was hit by a drone. Sergey Sobyanin is the mayor of Moscow. He said that two buildings other than residential ones were struck.

Russian media reported that debris from the drone’s first flight was discovered on the Komsomolsky Prospect in the city. The crash caused the roof of a two story administrative building to be destroyed and windows in nearby stores and apartments were also blown out. Sobyanin has promised to help residents repair their apartment as quickly as possible.

The windows of a 17th and 18th floor business centre on Likhachev Prospekt were shattered by two drones. Emergency workers had to temporarily stop traffic while they cleaned up the debris.

Russian media reported a third drone crash in Zelenograd suburb, Moscow. There were no injuries or deaths.

The Russian Defense Ministry claims that the drones had been downed by radio-electronic devices, and Ukraine has been blamed. Two unmanned aircraft prevented a terrorist act by the Kyiv government on Moscow’s territory on July 24. The agency reported that “radio-electronic war was used to stop two Ukrainian drones, and then they crashed.”

Christo Grozev, Bellingcat Russia’s investigator noted that the crash site was located near a variety of military installations, such as the Military University of the Defense Ministry and many secret divisions within the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Military, which includes its “cyberattack HQ.” You can also walk to the Defense Ministry main headquarters.

According to the U.S. Government, cyber-espionage groups Fancy Bear and APT28 operate from 20 Komsomolsky Prospekt.

Fancy Bear hackers are suspected of hacking into Hillary Clinton’s email and the servers for the Democratic National Committee. The EU sanctioned Igor Kostyukov and the subordinates of the 85th Special Service Center (Fancy Bear) in 2020 for cyberattacking the Bundestag, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the GRU.

Dmitry Peskov (President Putin’s spokesman) said that no new security measures are required following attacks on Moscow and Crimea, where the Russian Defense Ministry announced 17 drones had been downed in the early morning hours of Monday. According to him, “Everyone who is involved in providing security and protection for our region’s are on alert. They all take measures.”

Ukrainian media reports claim that the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry was responsible for the preparation of the Moscow drone attacks. However, Ukrainian officials haven’t commented officially on the matter. A source in Ukrainian intelligence said that all birds had arrived at Moscow.

Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transformation said that after the attack: “Russian air defense systems and electronic warfare are becoming increasingly incapable to defend the occupiers’ sky.” He did not confirm Kyiv’s involvement in the attack but said that “no matter what happens, it will continue to happen.”

Two drones attacked the Kremlin Senate Building on May 2, 2023. Moscow has repeatedly been attacked by drones since the start of the Ukrainian War. Russian officials called it a terror attack, and claimed that the attempt was to kill Vladimir Putin who was home at the moment.

Drones struck several areas of Moscow, and even the surrounding region on the morning of the 30th of May. On May 30, three drones crashed in to residential buildings both in New Moscow and the center of the city. On June 21, both New Moscow and Naro-Fominsk came under attack. On July 4, the Vnukovo Airport in Moscow was closed temporarily after drones shot down as they approached.
