It is estimated that the structure that was on fire was almost 200 years old. NOFD stated Friday that it did not suspect arson.
After a fire on Thursday, a workshop and storage space in an historic French Quarter structure is in ruin. New Orleans Fire Department said there was no indication that it had been set deliberately, but the cause has yet to be determined.
The NOFD was called to a fire call in the 500 Block of Dauphine Street at 6:30 pm. When they arrived, the building was close to collapse.
Shelly Hudson’s dogs started barking, alerting her to the disturbance. Her entire street soon became crowded with firetrucks. When she stepped out onto the balcony of her second-floor apartment, “flames were flying and embers were going wild.”
According to NOFD, the fire also spread into the adjacent shotgun house. The only damage was to the exterior wall and attic.
Hudson, along with other nearby neighbors, prayed that their homes were safe as they watched the firefighters fight against the fires. She said: “It’s scary.” I was worried that the fire would spread.
The fire was brought under control in about an hour. Hudson, as well as another witness who spoke to WWL Louisiana said that the firefighters seemed to be handling a challenging situation with ease. Alan Robinson from Texas said, “They ensured that everyone was safe.”
The damage was evident on Friday. Although the facade remains intact, both wood frame walls and roof have collapsed. A representative of the Olivier House Hotel said that the building is used as an area for storage and workshop by the hotel. It’s rarely occupied during the night. When firefighters arrived, no one was in the house or building.
It has had a rich history. The Historic New Orleans Collection says it was constructed around 1835, as a shotgun house. Hillel Pukof, a woodworker who bought the house in 1920 and made cedar chests for sale outside his door over a period of decades. Records show that his family owns the house.
