One year has passed since the Hurricane Nicole swept through Central Florida. It’s been said that if the storm had been an isolated event, it could have caused less damage. The fact that the storm came so soon after Ian was a sign of further damage to an already damaged coastline.
Daytona Beach Shores suffered extensive damage. The damage to beachfront condos and homes was extensive as the pounding surf smashed seawalls.
Nannette McKeel-Petrella owns Castaways Beach Resort units. The waves continued to pound the Castaways Beach Resort.
Castaways Beach Resort was one of the 24 hotels and condominiums that were evacuated from Daytona Beach Shores a year after Nicole caused a catastrophic beach erosion.
McKeel petrella said that the water and wind had caused a great deal of damage to the area around the pool, as well as the patio.
The coast was ravaged by this disaster.
Nancy Miller, Daytona Beach Shores’ mayor said: “I took someone there.” They started to cry and said that it looked like a warzone. That’s how it appeared. Just walls I’d seen for 50 or 60 years were crumbling. It was a total mess.
Miller stated that between 50% and 75% of the properties had their seawalls rebuilt. For others, it has taken a while to get a new seawall.
McKeel said, “There is the DEP permit process.” The county will have its say and the city, too. There are a number of steps you have to take before you move ahead with these large reconstruction projects.
This delay could have an impact on buildings already compliant.
Miller explained that if you had a gap between your home and your neighbor’s property, wind or rain could still damage it. We’re working on ensuring that all property owners do what is necessary to safeguard their properties and neighbors.
Miller stated that the city has contacted code enforcement as well as the county in order to begin issuing code violations. The city is re-constructing the buildings and seawalls differently to ensure they will survive the next storm.
McKeel petrella said, “An entire engineering plan was created for the new seawall.” It meets the current standards, and that is different from what was done 50 to 60 years ago, when it was first built. So, this one’s in compliance. Our seawall will be made from a new material. “We’re going to use a composite instead of concrete.”
Miller stated that the Department of Environmental Protection should thoroughly review all seawall plans for condos.
She said, “Now they have strict rules on what can be done with the seawall.” “I feel confident that it will hold up if approved by DEP.”
The process has been long and costly for many.
McKeel petrella stated that “Seawall” is not covered by insurance. A swimming pool isn’t insured. All those costs will be borne by the owner of the home. “Whether you’re talking about a residential or condo.”
The situation is improving. The mayor did say that it will take some time to restore things.
