Summerland Legion is closed due to water damage caused by a leaking roof.
After two consecutive rainstorms the roof of the Rosedale Room and lounge began to leak. After a partial collapse of the ceiling, water soaked into the carpet.
The next morning, I found out that we had had a small leak after a heavy rainstorm on July 11th. The leak was minor, not major, and I thought that I had patched the hole the following day. Which worked fine because we never got any rain until the 24th of July,” said Summerland Legion second-vice-president and house and grounds committee chairperson, Pat O’Sullivan.
The tiles were all over the floor. “The night of the 24th, we had a good storm with rain and wind. I decided to check it in the morning and see if my patch was still intact. I opened the door and found water everywhere. It was a complete mess. There were tiles everywhere.
Members of the Legion claim that insurance only covers damages to the structure, but will not cover a roof replacement because the roof has been in place for 20 years.
Roof repairs are estimated to cost around $75,000
The Legion takes in quite a bit of money, both through our gaming account and the poppy funds. We’re only allowed to use the money for special operations, said Summerland Legion Past President John Dorn.
We have some money in our reserve account, but not the full $75,000 we require.
The Legion has already had a difficult couple of years. First, there were pandemics that forced the closures. And just hours before Remembrance Day in 2011, thieves stole donations for the poppy fund and damaged the entire building.
The Legion received a huge amount of support then, and is now turning to the community again for assistance.
Dorn said, “The Summerland Community has shown a great deal of generosity in donating directly to us.”
We’ve reached about $30,000. There are people in line waiting for us to finish some items.
The American Legion is holding a parking-lot rummage and barbecue this weekend to raise money for the new roof.
Live music and kids tattoos will be available at the sale, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday from 9am-3pm.
Dorn said that the Legion will receive 25 percent of the proceeds from the sale of wine and other food at the local Ve Oh Lay Acres Winery the following weekend.
The animals will also donate any money they receive from the petting-zoo to the Legion.
There is currently no timeline for the re-opening of the Legion, but there are hopes that all repairs can be completed by mid October.
We have a brand new chef named Andy. His meals are amazing, and his pop-up tent is just around the corner. Dorn said that there are many clubs who use the facility to hold their meetings. We always host events such as dances, bingo nights and other similar things.
The most important day for the Legion is Remembrance Day.
