On Monday 28th August, heavy rains and flooding caused thousands to evacuate from seven local government areas of Negros Occidental.

According to a report that was received by the Capitol, as of Monday morning at 11:20 am, 3,838 NĂ©grenses or 1,135 households from 16 villages were affected by floods that began Sunday evening, August 27.

According to the first report, affected local government units are: Pontevedra (Don Salvador Bernedicto), Bago City (San Enrique), Pulupandan (Pulupandan), Valladolid and Murcia.

Diaz stated that the province is preparing food and hygiene packs for the evacuated.

Chiqui Gonzales is the provincial social welfare officer. She said that 800 food packages will be given to families displaced from their homes and housed in evacuation centres.

On Tuesday, August 29, all public offices will be closed, including those at the local, national and international levels.

Irene Belle Plotena said that heavy rains had caused a land slide in Barangay Bunga of Don Salvador Benedicto. The road had been passable since Monday afternoon.

As of the time she was interviewed, heavy floods had rendered Sitio Evangelista and Sitio tala-tala in Barangay aranda in Hinigaran impassable.

In some parts of the province, heavy rains have also caused the suspension of school in elementary and secondary schools in order to prepare for the school years 2023-2024.

Ian Arnold Arnaez is the public information officer of DeEd-Division of Negros Occidental. He said that some schools were being used as emergency evacuation centres.

Arnaez stated that some students have to travel a long distance from their school, particularly those who live in the hinterland area. He also said the rain could be dangerous for them especially if they are passing rivers.

Arnaez said that, under the DepEd guidelines, the school heads can still suspend classes even though the local government may not do so. If they believe the students are in danger due to the continuous rain, the head of the school has the right to take action.

He added, “They only need to notify the Division Office.”

Arnaez said that since it’s only the first day, they can switch to modular learning.

On Monday at 6 pm, all LGUs who have suspended classes for public or private levels will be resuming their regular schedule.
