This is Shell’s first platform in the area to use only wind and sun power. Shell announced that its new Timi platform, powered by solar and wind systems, has produced Malaysia’s first offshore natural gas.

Shell, based in London, said that the Timi wellhead platform’s use of solar and wind energy combined with design changes resulted to a 60% weight reduction compared to the conventional gas-turbine-powered platforms.

In other areas of Malaysia. Shell claims that the integration of solar and wind power in the Timi platform has several advantages. This hybrid concept not only minimizes the size and weight of the batteries, but it also maintains constant battery charge, particularly at night or during bad weather.

This hybrid concept also reduces overall costs for the construction and upkeep of offshore facilities. Timi, a field of sweet gas located almost 250km northwest from Bintulu in Sarawak, was discovered by scientists in 2018.

The new platform will be able to transport up to 1.5 meters of subsea gas and produce 50,000 BOEPD.

Eighty kilometers connected to a production center Shell had already deployed renewable energy platforms on the North Sea before Timi and in 2020 it will commission its first off-shore solar energy platform, located in Malaysia.

Shell was forced to examine the weather patterns in the area as it planned to construct its hybrid power project.

To reduce damage caused by direct sunlight, Shell made changes to its previous concept, including placing sensitive systems such as control and batteries in an area shaded below the deck.

Shell selected solar panels with higher efficiency to reduce the footprint. The company chose to install the solar panels slightly lower than usual (5deg instead of 15deg), to maximize the amount of sunlight available.

Shell realized that despite Malaysia’s low average wind speed, it could still develop offshore wind in Malaysia.

The company recognized this potential and developed new advanced technology turbine designs to operate at low speeds. These are slowly gaining ground among oil-and-gas facilities. Gas is being distributed throughout Southeast Asia.

Wind power also helps reduce battery needs. Shell stated that the cloud cover associated with monsoons in this region generally requires at least five full days of backup battery power.

Shell decided to install enough batteries for only four days because monsoon season brings higher winds. The Timi rig has a backup diesel generator which can be used as a last option. It will automatically start if batteries are low, and recharge the batteries while the rig is powered.

Timi will be developed under a contract for production sharing with the Shell local subsidiary, which has a working interest of 75%.

Petronas Carigali is the other partner with a 15% stake, followed by Brunei Energy Exploration at 10%.

Shell has made an investment decision for 2022 on deep-water sour fields off the coasts of Sarawak. These are planned to be developed using a solar powered platform.
